The Vendicari nature reserve and faunistic oasis

This protected area is located in the Syracuse province and is noteworthy for the presence of salt marshes that are used as resting places during bird migration. Inside the reserve there are various archeological and architectonic sites. There are numerous species which can be found in Vendicari: wading birds, grey herons, storks, flamingos besides mallard ducks, seaguls and sea crows and black winged stilts which rest here during their journey from the Sahara desert to their nesting places in northern Europe.
